The 500 largest grantmaking foundations in California.
Every organization below files a public Form 990 or 990-PF with the IRS. We've pulled the most recent filing for each, ranked them by assets, and made them searchable by region, funder type and size — so you can build a prospect list without paying for a research subscription.

How to use this directory
A research shortcut, not an application portal.
- 01
Filter to your fit
Use region, funder type, and size to narrow the list to foundations that actually fund work like yours.
- 02
Read the 990 filing
Click “View 990 filings” to see real grants paid, amounts, and recipients. That history is the fastest way to judge alignment.
- 03
Apply on their site
Once you have a shortlist, visit each foundation’s website for current deadlines, eligibility rules, and application instructions.
SVCED does not represent, endorse, or have a relationship with these foundations. Figures come from the most recent electronically filed IRS return and may lag the current year. For open opportunities, visit the California grants directory.
FAQ
Understanding the data.
- What is a Form 990 or 990-PF?
- A tax return most tax-exempt organizations must file annually with the IRS. For private foundations, the 990-PF reports assets, revenue, expenses, and every grant paid during the year.
- Why are the numbers from a past year?
- We use the most recent electronically filed return available through public sources. Foundations file once a year, so the newest data is usually 12–18 months behind.
- Does a big asset number mean they are giving grants now?
- Not necessarily. A large endowment shows capacity, but it does not guarantee open applications or interest in new grantees. Always check the actual grants list inside the 990 before deciding to reach out.
- Why can't I apply directly from this page?
- This directory is a research tool, not a grant portal. Each foundation runs its own application process. We link you to their public IRS filings so you can qualify your prospects, then you apply through the foundation's own website.
- How do I know if a foundation is a good fit?
- Look at the recipients and amounts in their 990. If they consistently fund organizations and causes similar to yours, they belong on your shortlist. If their giving history looks unrelated, move on.
- Does SVCED endorse these foundations?
- No. SVCED has no affiliation with, and does not vouch for, any foundation listed here. The directory is compiled from public IRS data for educational and research purposes only.

How to use this directory
Research first, then reach out.
A large balance sheet does not mean a foundation is accepting proposals. Many private foundations give only to organizations they already know. Read the most recent 990 or 990-PF — it lists the grants actually paid, the amounts, and the recipients — and use that to judge whether your work is a genuine fit before you write a word.
Figures come from each organization's most recent electronically filed return and can lag the current year. SVCED does not represent, endorse, or have any relationship with these foundations.
Looking for open opportunities rather than funder profiles? Start with the California grants directory, or learn how to read a 990 and build a prospect list through SVCED Learning.
